Local residents in Spalding, Geraldton will soon have access to a community garden at the Mitchell Street Community Centre thanks to Arc Infrastructure's recent donation of $2,000.

Arc Infrastructure Acting Regional Lead Midwest, Trevor Blackmore, said Arc Infrastructure is proud to partner with the Mitchell Street Community Centre to assist in the establishment of a garden that can
be used by the local community.

“The community garden came about thanks to an enthusiastic group of local Aboriginal Elders who meet at the Centre and over the past year have lobbied, networked and raised funds for its establishment,” Mr Blackmore said.

“It’s great to be able to partner with other local organisations to help the Centre provide a safe, welcoming environment for all the people who use it.”

Associate Professor Monica Moran from the WA Centre for Rural Health said the Mitchell Street Community Centre provides a range of community services to the community of Spalding.

“Spalding is geographically cut off from the city by the North West Highway and the industrial centre, and the Mitchel Street Community Centre has played an important role in reinvigorating the suburb,” Ms Moran said.

"Since the acquisition of the Mitchell Street Community Centre by the WA Centre for Rural Health in 2017, the Centre's activities have grown from only one half days per week to being utilised by up to 14 different community groups every day of the week.

“The Centre offers a series of children’s activities including after school and school holiday programs as well as disability, mental health and drug and alcohol services and an Aboriginal playgroup.

“Thanks to the funds provided by Arc Infrastructure, the community garden will be available for the local community in Geraldton, which will contribute towards the establishment of the Mitchell Street Community Centre as a hub for local residents,” Ms Moran said.
