During October, Arc Infrastructure's Executive Director, Murray Cook, swapped balance sheets for lasagne sheets in support of Foodbank WA's 25th anniversary year fundraising event, Meal Makers.
Meal Makers was an exciting week-long event held at the Foodbank Centre for Hunger that saw business leaders from across Perth sharpen their cooking skills alongside a renowned local chef before advancing to the community kitchen to help create a record 2,500 meals in a week.
Murray cooked alongside one of WA’s best known chefs, Kate Lamont, where he learnt how to create the perfect mayonnaise to accompany a dish of prawns with soba, shitake and tamari, before assisting in the preparation of a paella in the community kitchen.
Prior to the event, Murray raised $5,000 for Foodbank, which will provide 10,000 meals for Western Australians in need.
Arc Infrastructure Executive Director Murray Cook was proud to be involved in the inaugural Meal Makers event.
“It was fun learning some new cooking skills from Kate Lamont but also very fulfilling cooking in the community kitchen, knowing we were helping feed those in need,” Mr Cook said.
“At Arc, we are pleased to be able to support organisations like Foodbank, who rely on the generosity of their partners and donors to enable them to do such valuable work in the community.”
Hunger is on the rise in Western Australia, yet it remains a largely hidden crisis. Despite Foodbank’s continued efforts to source enough surplus and donated food for people in need, the gap between the amount of food we rescue and what’s needed is widening.
Every month, the charities that work with Foodbank provide relief to over 815,000 Australians experiencing food insecurity. Despite this huge effort, charities are struggling to keep up with demand.
According to the Foodbank Hunger Report 2019, not only has there has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of Western Australian’s seeking food relief from charities, 30 per cent of additional food is required to meet current demand alone.
Arc’s continued support of Foodbank will help the not-for-profit organisation continue provide hunger relief to vulnerable Western Australians.
