This level of TAP shows the worker has an understanding of the hazards in the rail corridor and provides them with knowledge of the mitigation of those hazards. Workers with this level of TAP must always be under direct supervision of Protection Officer (PO) and are not permitted to enter within five metres of the nearest rail without a PO being present. 

Train staff with this level of TAP may work under the direct supervision of the Rail Traffic Crew of passenger services to enter the rail corridor for attending to passenger emergencies / evacuations.

E-Learning:

• Total cost: $180 per person
• Duration: 1/2 day (includes theory assessment).

This level of TAP shows the worker has the competence to provide protection to a work group that occupies the running line or siding when an obstruction is placed on the track.

Classroom based:

• Total cost: $1,920 per person
• Duration: 5 days 

Medicals: 

• PO: CAT 3 Rail Medical
• POLO: CAT 1 Rail Medical - can perform Lookout Duties

Re-assessment:

• Every 2 years (see Reassessments)

This level of TAP shows the Protection Officer (PO) has the competence to supervise and operate track vehicles on the network.

Classroom based:

• Total cost: $980 per person
• Duration: 2 days (includes both theory and practical assessments)

Pre-requisites: 

• Current Category 1 Rail Medical
• Minimum 3 months PO experience
• To avoid your application being declined, please upload one of the following Statements of Attainment as an attachment when enrolling in this course:
  • TLIC3045 Operate road/rail vehicle OR
  • TLIC2059 Propel and operate light on-track equipment OR
  • TLIC2058 Travel medium or heavy self-propelled on-track equipment

Valid for:

• 2 years

This level of TAP shows the worker has the Competence of a Possession Protection Officer (PO) and the management of multiple worksites in an LPA. This course is by request only, and not available on our calendar.

Classroom based:

• Total cost: $980 per person
• Duration: 2 days

Pre-requisites: 

• Current Category 1 Rail Medical
• Two years as an active Protection Officer with Arc;
• A requirement established by Arc for a project where a PPO is identified as necessary; and 
• A letter of testimonial to your safety history as a Rail Worker.

Valid for:

• 2 years

This level of TAP shows the worker has the competence to apply network safeworking rules and procedures for driving rail traffic on the network and request blocking facilities for the protection of tasks associated with their rail traffic. 

Classroom based:

• Total cost: $2,350 per person
• Duration: 5 days (includes both theory and practical assessments)

Pre-requisites: 

• Current Category 1 Rail Medical

For all renewals of Protection Officer (PO) Accreditation levels and above, a reassessment of the Arc Infrastructure Network Safeworking Rules and Procedures is required prior to expiration of the applicant’s Track Access Permit (TAP).

NOTE: For Supervised Worker (SW), Track Vehicle Operator (TVO) & WTO08 Albany Bulk Handling, please enrol into one of the eLearning courses.

To avoid delays in accessing the Arc network, please ensure that you allow up to 10 business days for our Learning and Development Administrators to process any applications from the date of the course (pending the assessment is successfully completed and all required documentation has been submitted).

• 1 day (Theory assessment ONLY)

There are two components to ensuring your TAP is current at all times; accreditation training and medical updates.

A reminder will be issued three (3) months prior, notifying the permit holder of when and what component will be expiring. 

It is the permit holder’s responsibility to ensure their details (email address, employer, address etc.) are current on their TAP profile in order to receive reminder notifications.

To update your details please complete the Track Access Permit Change of Details Form and email to asktraining@arcinfra.com.

TIP: Enter the dates on your Permit Letter into your calendar reminders to avoid expiration of your Track Access Permit.

All TAP applications take up to 10 business days to process, and are actioned in order of complete and correct documentation received. Incorrect documentation may cause delays in processing.

Rail Medical renewals

If your rail medical is about to expire, you will need to undertake a new rail medical examination as per the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers. 

A list of Approved Health Professionals for the rail industry is available at www.riw.net.au.

Arc Infrastructure does not book medicals on behalf of permit holders. Please familiarise yourself with the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers website.

To ensure your rail medical renewal is processed within 10 business days from submission, the following must be attached when registering via the Medical & Track Access Permit Renewal course listed below.

Required Documentation:

• Health Assessment Report (signed and dated by AHP and yourself)
• Request and Report Form (Part B & C only)
• Track Access Permit Medical Renewal Form (signed by the applicant)

Permit Fee:

• Cost: $110 fee (incl. GST) per person

Medical expiries are based on the opinion of an Authorised Health Professional. Variations to the National Standards may apply due to medical reasons.

Rail Traffic Crew & Operational Ground Support TAP Applications

​Arc Rail Requirements

Learn about the fundamentals of rail with the Arc Rail Requirements course.  

This course provides an introduction to the technical aspects of rail infrastructure, including track components, signalling and network control systems. Participants will explore the history of rail in Western Australia and gain an understanding of the most common rail terminology and acronyms.

This course is designed for newcomers to the rail industry and people with limited knowledge of rail infrastructure. 

Course participants will learn about:

• Rail terminology and acronyms
• Arc Infrastructure network
• Track components and geometry
• Working on and around the network and the hazards 
• The various jobs roles that are required to run a safe and efficient network.
