In June, works commenced on a $16.3 million project to re-rail 30km of life-expired rail on the dual gauge railway between Avon and Kwinana.

The Avon to Kwinana track upgrade project involves the replacement of existing plain carbon 47kg and 60kg rail with head hardened 50kg and 60kg rail respectively, along with approximately 1,800 sleeper replacements. Track slewing at various locations to maintain or improve track and structural clearances between adjacent tracks will also take place.

Project Lead Track & Civil, Nathan Byrne, said the valley is a complex and challenging area in which to work due to the local terrain and access within the valley, and due to its strategic location is only one of a handful of places on the network with dual tracks – two rail lines running adjacent to each other

“The Avon to Kwinana railway forms the western part of the Eastern Goldfields Railway and carries interstate freight services, grain traffic and passenger services,” Nathan said.

“The railway will remain active with one of the two adjacent lines operational to ensure minimal disruption to Arc customers.”

Works are currently being carried out by Arc Infrastructure in partnership with a contractor using a team of around 70 people.

The works are expected to be completed at the end of October.
