Arc’s Third Party team has been working hard behind the scenes recently to enable a number of State Government project milestones to be achieved across the regional and metro areas.

During the 86-hour ‘mega shut’ on the Arc network earlier in October, the team supported the Public Transport Authority (PTA) and Main Roads WA with the achievement of key milestones for the New Midland Station project, Merredin Station High Level Platform project and the replacement of the Walgoolan Bridge on Great Eastern Highway.

The Third Party team has been supporting the New Midland Station project for a number of years. During the 1-4 October shut period, despite challenging weather and site constraints, Arc provided support with several critical activities, including:
  • Removal and replacement of two end of life turnouts
  • Formation and track widening across 400m of the up main track
  • Replacement of 150m of the down main track
  • Relocation and replacement of old Out of Gauge Detector Gantry equipment
  • Commissioning new signalling infrastructure
  • Reinstatement of Cale Street level crossing with asphalt and line marking completed in between train services after the shut period.
The Third Party Team always work closely with their counterparts at different agencies; to complete the above the scope of work required a significant amount of collaboration between the Midland Junction Alliance and Arc to ensure things ran smoothly.

The Merredin Station high level platform, planned for use by PTA regional passenger services, involved the replacement of the existing low-level platform with a raised platform compliant with Disability and Discrimination Act (DDA) standards.

Most of the platform construction was completed during the shut period, including the installation of structural elements, concrete pouring and installation of additional platform features such as lighting and handrails.

The Third Party team has previously supported this project through design reviews and provided rail corridor access approval. Approvals follow a rigorous review of the proposed construction methodology, track monitoring plan, lifting plan, and rail safety management plan. Platform works will be followed by removal of a pedestrian crossing in late 2024.

The replacement of the Walgoolan Bridge on Great Eastern Highway involved construction of a new road over rail bridge to higher standards, so only the demolition of the old structure was required during the October shut period.

Third Party Projects Lead Justin Rapp said it had been intense period for the team coordinating and supporting such varied works in three different locations.

“It’s important for us to support these critical projects, and I appreciate the effort of the team to coordinate these works.

“Facilitating three additional third party projects during our planned shut period reduced the impact on customers, while also enabling these important State projects to achieve key milestones,” said Justin.

Works on the New Midland Station and Thornlie Cockburn Link also continue with the input and support of Arc’s Third Party project team.
