Arc Infrastructure was delighted to receive a global Special Achievement in GIS Award (SAG Award) from Esri Global on Tuesday.
The SAG Awards were handed out on 16 July 2024 as part of the Esri Users’ conference taking place in the US.
Arc received the award for the groundbreaking work completed with technology partner Esri on the Situational Awareness Platform. The project entered its Phase 3 in 2024.
Situational Awareness was developed to resolve multiple business issues, including providing more insights than ever before on the movements of trains through dark territory. Dark territory is the area of Arc’s network which has no signalling and train movements are managed exclusively on Train Orders issued primarily over radio communications.
The platform has elevated the availability of data, bringing it together in a single easy to use platform which can be accessed by anyone at Arc.
At the time the project commenced, our team identified there was limited situational awareness for trains, road rail vehicles (RRVs) and work on track, with minimal data received from wayside equipment. This created challenges for different roles and activities across the business.
Implementing one centralised platform to visualise “a day of operations” has allowed Arc Infrastructure to use technology for data-driven decision making.
CEO Murray Cook congratulated the team for having their efforts recognised in a global forum.
“Several years of hard work has not only resulted in a critical business tool, but international recognition.
“It was fantastic to see the team attend the Esri Users Conference to collect the award in-person,” Murray said.
General Manager Paul Lowney said he was proud of the team’s hard work to translate the project concept into a platform which is now widely used at Arc.
“The Situational Awareness platform provides easy access to critical information, separate from our safe working procedures, in a way that optimises efficiency of our operations,” Paul said.
“The development of the platform shows our focus on embracing and using new technologies to solve business issues through innovation.”
The Situational Awareness Platform is also a finalist at the Australasian Railway Industry Awards, which will be held by the Australasian Railway Association in August.
The project was one of 197 nominations chosen at the SAG Awards from more than 100,000 Esri clients worldwide.
