General Manager Commercial & Development Nathan Speed represented Arc in what is our fifth year in a row supporting the Meal Makers event.
Meal Makers helps Foodbank WA continue to provide meals to those doing it tough, distribute food and groceries through frontline charities, offer breakfast and fruit to schools, deliver education programs and engage in advocacy on behalf of people who experience hunger and food insecurity.
This was the second year Meal Makers has been run as a Mystery Box Challenge, requiring participants to use ingredients from the Foodbank warehouse to prepare a healthy and nutritious meal suitable for a family on a strict budget.
The meals prepared by the participants were then sampled by Foodbank customers during the event.
Nathan said that while it was daunting knowing their food was going to be tasted, it was a privilege to be able to meet and serve the Foodbank customers and to see firsthand the incredibly important role that Foodbank plays in the community.
“The Meal Makers event serves as an important personal reminder of the fortunate position that I am in, and that an increasing number of Western Australians are grappling with an issue I take for granted - food security.”
“We’re proud to be long term partners of Foodbank and I was honoured to once again represent Arc in Meal Makers and to see and hear about the enormous impact that Foodbank has on the lives of its customers,” Nathan said.
More people are reaching out for help from Foodbank than ever before. With the cost of living, rental crisis and interest rates rising, many Western Australians are being pushed into financial stress and are struggling to put food on the table, many for the first time in their lives:
- 1 in 3 households have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months
- 1 in 5 households have skipped meals to make ends meet in the last 12 months
- 388,000 households in Western Australia are living in food insecurity
- More than 120,000 children are living in severely food insecure households in Western Australia (food insecurity occurs when a household needs to spend more than 25% of their disposable income on food)
