Arc Infrastructure, Genesis Minerals, and the State Government have reached an agreement to shorten the Leonora Branch Line and for Arc to invest in new open access rail facilities, paving the way for major mining expansion and economic growth in the Goldfields region.

The Leonora Branch Line will be shortened by around 7km, enabling Genesis Minerals’ gold mining expansion at their Tower Hill location.

Arc will invest to construct a new Leonora Goldfields Rail Terminal at the new rail terminus point east of Goldfields Highway. The new terminal will collocate open access rail facilities, Arc’s maintenance facilities and will also include Aurizon’s private intermodal terminal. The new terminal will provide continued access for existing rail users and capacity for new rail access seekers.

The new terminal includes space for hardstand and stock piling with adjacent rail frontage. It has the potential to facilitate future freight tasks as well as improving the facilities for existing operations. Provision has also been included for future expansion with the ability to accommodate trains up to 1800m in length.

Arc’s support for this project enables Genesis Minerals’ expansion which will create regional employment opportunities in the Goldfields and increase mining royalties, delivering benefits across WA.

Leonora residents will also benefit from the shortening of the rail line through the removal of six level crossings, including at Goldfields Highway.

Arc Infrastructure Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Unwin said the agreement was a great example of industry collaboration to enable State growth.

"This partnership with Genesis Minerals and the State Government is about more than rail - it’s about enabling growth that will deliver lasting benefits for the Goldfields region and the State.
“By shortening the rail line and constructing replacement rail facilities, we’re helping accelerate mining expansion, create jobs, and strengthen regional economies, while ensuring continued access for current and future rail users. It’s a win for industry, communities, and Western Australia’s future."

Genesis Minerals Managing Director Raleigh Finlayson said the agreement would deliver immense benefits for all stakeholders.

“This is a testament to what can be achieved through strong partnerships and a shared vision. I thank the Government of Western Australia, and extend our sincere appreciation to Arc Infrastructure for their collaboration to support a great outcome for the Goldfields region.”
