Arc is partnering with the Public Transport Authority (PTA) to deliver the Carnamah to Mingenew upgrade works under the Agricultural Supply Chain Improvement Project Package 1(ASCI).
To deliver any type of works project, Arc’s assets team must first define the scope. In this instance a full analysis of the track, sleepers and fittings along the 77km scheduled for upgrade.
To support improved efficiency for ASCI, Arc’s asset team have utilised Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the first time in completing an analysis of the existing track.
To support field verification and scoping activities, an AI Vision system was used to generate the total number of sleepers between Carnamah and Mingenew. This model enabled automated detection and analysis of sleeper type and fastenings, when aerial imaging was inputted into the system.
In parallel, a Digital Twin Model was developed to align captured data to track network model. This model was then enhanced to identify missing sleepers missed by the AI based on spacing and identified sleeper pattern.
Once this desktop assessment of the scope has been completed, the next step is for the track engineers to complete a visual verification of the data and ensure it matches with the physical asset.
To complete this process, the engineers completed a walk of the full project area to determine the delivery method.
Their findings were compared to the outputs of the Digital Twin and AI visioning system to define the final scope of works, including numbers of sleepers and types of rail fastenings to be replaced.
General Manager Network Strategy and Customer Operations Paul Lowney said it had been a collaborative effort between the Major Projects team and the Asset Management team to undertake the scoping.
“Completing such an intense scoping activity would not have been possible without both teams working together,” Paul said.
